Through Our Hands Portfolio review
Through our Hands Portfolio is a well laid out, full colour soft back book which provides the reader with a snapshot of the textile world as it is today. The publication is an extension of the online magazine Through Our Hands, which was born out of one woman’s desire to stage an exhibition of textiles by leading makers.
It is now a collaboration between founder Annabel Rainbow and Laura Kemshall, both of whom are well known for their art quilts. Among the the carefully selected international affiliate artists in this exhibiting group there are many who will be familiar to those interested in quilting; however, the group is very diverse and also includes artists working in embroidery, mixed media, and installation.
What’s in the book – Chapter by Chapter
The book begins with an interesting and informative foreword by Maggie Grey, a renowned teacher and former editor of Embroidery magazine. Maggie is the author of many books and is now editor of the online magazine Workshop on the Web.
The introduction tells us how and why the artists were selected to be part of Through Our Hands Portfolio and outlines the vision of its founders and the ethos of the group.
Both Annabel Rainbow and Laura Kemshall have 4 page spreads with some great detail shots of their work and an artist’s statement. Then follows a double page spread for each of the 27 artists in the group including a personal statement which gives some insight into why their work was made.
The artists represented in the book are : Deirdre Adams, Bethan Ash, Genevieve Attinger, Els Van Baarle, Linda Barlow, Elizabeth Barton, Sue Benner, Ester Bornemisza, Bobby Britnell, Dianne Cevaal, Jette Clover, Linda Colsh, Jenni Dutton, Michala Gyetvai, Sara Impey, Laura Kemshall, Linda Kemshall, Alicia Merrett, Sandra Meech, Mirjam Pet-Jacobs, Susan Lenz, Olga Prins Lukowski, Annabel Rainbow, Clare Smith, Sue Stone, Bente Vold Klausen, Jeanne Williamson.
Towards the end of the book there are additional features written by artists Michala Gyvtvai, Sara Impey, Sue Stone, and Alicia Merrett which take a more in depth look at the fundamental principles and processes behind their work.
Who is it for?
Quilters will for sure be interested in this book, but there is so much more than quilting within its pages; it would make a fantastic gift for anyone interested in contemporary textile practice. There are lots of close up details, always good to see in a book about textiles, so it makes a great reference book for anyone with an interest in textile techniques and it’s very good value to boot at just £10 .
