I myself have been collecting images from the media recently whilst following the Brexit ‘talks’ unfolding before my eyes. The facial expressions caught by keen eyed photographers really appear to show politician’s thoughts and feelings. I’m half deaf so I lip read and watch body language quite a bit. Conveying a message in art is really important, it makes the viewer question and think. I often find artwork speaks to me more when there is something underlying. Good art is about having a voice, an opinion, a feeling, an expression. I see this in Kirsty. […]

She creates pieces of art using reclaimed and recycled materials such as newspapers and plastic carrier bags. The reason she does this is to try and communicate the message of social responsibility in her work which is constantly centred on the “throw-away culture”. She recycles different recyclable materials and stitches on top of them to add texture and to bring that piece to life in a sense. Her way of doing this is to bring out the fact that waste isn’t waste it can be reused and many creative things can be made from it. (TextileArtist.org. 10 Contemporary embroidery artists. Retrieved from https://www.textileartist.org/10-contemporary-embroidery-artists/). She began doing embroidery on reading materials such as newspapers, magazines and paper and the final outcome looked completely different to the original material. Her aim is to push the boundaries of materials and their uses. (TextileArtist.org. Kirsty Whitlock Interview: Embroidery transforms.
