Marjolein Starreveld is an artist and editor for the Dutch magazine Textiel Plus. Here she reviews the latest book offering from Ellen Bakker and her team over at Textile-link.
Textile-link’s TextileArt Around the World brings you the colorful world of textile art. More than 800 photographs display the work of 160 artists from around the globe. The book presents an overview of the various disciplines and techniques from within the textile world, an amazing array of the most imaginative approaches to using felt, chrochet, embroidery and weaving.
Artists from various backgrounds incorporate elements from their disciplines (like painting or graphic design) within their respective textile designs.
One of them, a young painter Jo Hamilton (recently featured on TextileArtist.org), brings every-day objects to life, as if “painting” with crochet techniques. Another artist Neta Amir creates her peculiar, but at the same time very intimate puppets, combining traditional textile crafts and skills with photography, painting and even conceptual art.
TextileArt Around the World provides an overview of Contemporary textile art in today’s global art world; it highlights the versatile nature of the artists and artworks in its field. In particular when incorporating traditional approaches, skills and disciplines with contemporary techniques, the outcome is astounding and unique.
Alongside the work of the artists there are brief artist statements outlining their practice and also a web address. The book provides us with a wonderful, worldwide summary of textile art and its protagonists. This brief dictionary offers plenty of inspiration, not only to artists working in textile, but also to any person with a keen interest in textile art.
